Do you ever find yourself longing for a “burning bush” moment? If you don’t understand what I’m talking about, please allow me to explain. Sometimes I find myself desiring some kind of sure enough God-powered miracle to knock my socks off. You know, some unmistakable sign from the creator Himself to somehow assure me that my faith is not in vain.
Oh, me of little faith. Surely those larger than life characters of the Old Testament had it made, right?
I mean wouldn’t you be forever faithful and lose all trace of doubt if God spoke to you through the fire of a burning bush like Moses witnessed? Wouldn’t you have your weak faith transformed into rock solid commitment after witnessing something like the parting of the Red Sea?
I mean, all those Old Testament Israelites who saw those kinds of miracles firsthand stayed forever faithful to following the commands of the Holy One. Right?
Oh, that’s right, they stayed kinda forever faithful for awhile, maybe even when it was convenient for them. Then they strayed again and again and again. Those stiff necked chosen ones.
I guess maybe those “larger than life” miracles tend to lose their impact with the passage of time and ongoing exposure to the ways of this world. Do I really need those kinds of miraculous events that get my head to spinning?
I’ve come to realize that there are “burning bush” moments happening all around me; I’m just to blind to see and understand. You know what I mean?
The verse I need to hear more than ever is one that I so often somehow ignore, or avoid. ”Be still and know that I am God.”
God could still speak to me through a burning bush if he wanted. But I get the feeling he wants me to better learn to appreciate the many miracles that are all around me. And I’m not talking necessarily about the kinds of miracles that might make the front page. I’m referring to those “God moments” of clarity that we all experience from time to time, and I believe can experience more abundantly by simply taking our blinders off.
I heard a saying from a church friend of mine a few years ago that emphasizes the point: Coincidences are simply miracles in which God chooses to remain anonymous. Have you ever found yourself thinking, wow, what a coincidence. Was it really?
Here’s a small God moment that I did manage to take notice of very recently. I had a friend at work give me a copy of a brand new GIANT PRINT Bible. It seems his aunt had started a ministry at her church where she buys Bibles and other religious books and passes them out to people.
She had given a sackful of books to my colleague.
Anyway, he knew I taught Sunday school and thought I might like the Bible. I thanked him and actually thought it was pretty cool because the print was much bigger than even my large print Bible, and my 50 plus year old eyes are fading.
A few days after he gave me the book, my wife and I found ourselves in a hospital room where my elderly mother-in-law was being treated for pneumonia. During conversation, she happened to mention how she could barely read her Bible any longer because of cataracts. Guess what I promptly delivered to her?
Open your eyes. God has big and small miracles and “coincidences” He’s revealing every day.
Enjoy yours.
