So who’s drum are you marching to? We each have a point in life when all of our beats blend and melt into one solid rhythm. No matter how hard you try to keep your own beat going… the noise of life around you will lull you into joining the beat that drums around you. Every pastor, every deacon, every good man of God, every church attendee, and even evil people…are subject to the rhythms of life around them – it’s natural.
Sheep, cows, birds, buffalo, dolphins, whales, wolves… dudes… we all fall into a common rhythm when we hang around together.
Breaking out of the mold and hammering out your own beat requires effort, energy, determination, stamina, and desire. And when you believe to the core of who you are that your beat is important and worth pounding louder and louder… you stand out. Men are more than capable of beating our chest and raising our noise level when it comes to career, sports, and opinion. Conviction sets in and we want to be heard.
What about faith in God? What about the good news of Christ Jesus? Got an opinion on that? Do you pound out that beat?
The natural beat that the world offers is quite attractive. As they would say on American Band stand… “it has a good beat and you can dance to it.” But when you listen to the beat that Christ offered His disciples and you and I… it’s booming. You cannot be in the room with an authentic man of God and not hear the beat. Attending a powerful worship service, regardless of location puts the beat in your chest. Hanging out with guys and connecting your faith… puts the drums in sync. Reading God’s word, blogs on faith, books about faith… changes your beat.
The challenge we all face comes when we set our beat to be in rhythm with God, then we step into a world that is thumping out an entirely different sound. Are we bold enough to stand in that crowd and continue to pound out our beat? Do we have enough conviction to keep hammering it out even when it seems no one is listening? When you make your noise, people will turn to listen and evaluate whether or not you are worth their time and attention. They will assess whether or not to keep pounding out the beat that they’ve been playing for years, or if they should join you and add to your beat?
What people are looking for is an authentic, natural beat that they can join with. We can all get on our stage and begin drumming… but the effort is wasted when we are out of sync with God.
Today, go beat your drum as you always do… but change your rhythm to match God’s beat. Show others how to get into rhythm by pounding out God’s beat. Do this by immersing yourself in the Good News of Christ! Anything else is simply making a lot of noise and quite distracting.
