When I tell you that I’m rolling on the floor laughing everytime I look at this picture, it’s not an exaggeration! I can’t stop laughing at this tragedy! I don’t know if you caught it or not, but a few months ago the much celebrated “World’s Ugliest Dog Competition” held it’s 20th annual competition at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California. Each year, the contestants approach the contest with no prep work, no vast array of handlers, and virtually no need for brushing out the hair… the winner doesn’t have that problem. Here’s the shocker… the picture here is “Peewee Martini”… he didn’t win! haha!
The 2008 winner (shown below), GUS, has a compelling back story. In the time of Olympics, when you can walk real fast and win a Gold Medal, I think we should be able to break up the non-stop volleyball competition for a quick parade of these champions. Gus’ story is compelling like a train wreck or a 30 car pile up on I-10. According to the Sonoma -Marin Fair’s website Gus wa rescued from a bad home and now suffers from skin cancer, has no hair, has only three legs (one amputated because of the skin tumor) and is missing an eye lost to a tomcat in a cat fight.
The proud owner of GUS walked away with $1000.00 in prize money (much of which will probably go toward Gus’ medical bills). If you ask me, I would save the medical intervention and find the old boy some pain medication that would make him “comfortable”. Also, I think somebody should have chipped in a few bucks for old peewee as well.
You can’t help but feel sorry for the old chap. He’s drawn a pretty low lot in life, but here he is… now heralded as a champion and loved by his owners. Have you ever been there? Screwed up and ugly on the outside because of something you’ve done or said? But deep down, you’re still that same guy who is trying to make it through this life on the positive side. Aren’t you glad somebody still accepts you when you’re a jerk? God loves us… takes us in when we’re screwed up like old Gus… and says… no matter what, I’m gonna hold you up. The real key to this though is that our job, according to Christ, is to hold our brothers up when they “get ugly”. You don’t throw your bro’ out when he’s down… you pick him up, tell him to get it together, and when he does…. you tell people about it. It’s called grace… and God’s got plenty for you.
Gus and peewee are thankful in their own little doggy ways that a second chance was offered. Shouldn’t you be thankful when God gives you a “do-over”? I know I am.
