One of the coolest promises in the Bible comes from Matthew 18:20 where Jesus tells us, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. ” I’m reminded of the time when Moses was standing in front of the burning bush and God commanded him to remove his sandals because he was standing on holy ground. Shouldn’t we have the same mindset when gathering in the name of Christ? That our conversation, our words, our actions, our plans… are being unveiled in the living presence of God almighty?
The jobsite, office, workplace, shop, plant, board room, or wherever you call the place where you earn a living, is the most significant place of interaction for men. How often do we consider the promise of Jesus, that where we gather in His name… He is with us? Can this happen at work? Most certainly it can… and it does. In fact, there are more meaningful interactions of faith at the workplace than there will ever happen on a Sunday morning at your local church building. It’s easy to walk in the church door with our sunday-morning-saint face and our good-to-see-you-handshake. I can put on show for a couple of hours and do it quite well. But doing that at work? Every day? That’s a different story entirely…. life happens.
As you move through your career as a man who believes in God and actually believes Christ is your King… think about your workplace. Take a few minutes to reflect on what you bring to the table. I’m not talking about skills, talents, or job performance…I’m talking about Christ in you. Do you bring Christ to the table? In the small circles and groups of buddies on the job… do they know you follow Christ? Have you ever shunned Christ because it might hurt your chance of advancement or inclusion? Don’t be embarrassed it happens all the time. Heck, Peter walked with Christ and said, “I don’t know him”… 3 TIMES! That doesn’t make it okay, but it gives you permission to admit a few things to yourself without feeling like a goat.
When two or more gather who have the Holy Spirit within them, there is something mysterious that happens… a communion of the spirit takes place. We can’t be responsible for other men’s actions, but we can certainly guarantee that we’re bringing Jesus Christ to the table every time we gather. In those meetings and moments where another man of God brings Christ to the table with you… be alert… you are standing on Holy Ground. The living God in Christ is in your midst. Act like it.
Our role as men of faith at the workplace isn’t to transform the company into a Christian business…. our role is to bring Christ to the table at every encounter. Give Him an opportunity to show up through His promise. Encourage other brothers to bring their best so you can create Holy ground right where you work. Christ Jesus will show up and take care of business.
