We know that we have come to know Him if we keep His commands. – 1 John 2:3 (NIV)
He constantly interrupts people when they are talking. He directs every conversation back to himself and what he likes. He talks about his great accomplishments over and over. He is tireless in the pursuit to convince everyone in the room that he’s important.
He’s the guy that shows up at Christian events, says all the right things… and returns to work acting like a pirate on a 3 day furlough. He talks about his faith, he prays before meals when it’s politically appropriate, and he rarely does anything for others unless he can ensure it makes himself look good.
He spends his life telling you he’s full of good fruit… and never showing any evidence of good fruit.
Jesus plainly teaches that it’s not the tree that we should observe to determine what it produces… but the fruit is the telling sign. Are we “that guy”? Do we understand what Jesus actually said? Take a look at the trail a person leaves and you’ll have a wonderful indication of what you can expect in the future.
Only when we begin producing actions and words that reflect the heart of God, will we know that we truly know Christ.
Who do you know that leaves a trail of rotten fruit?
What kind of fruit are you growing?
PRAY: God, I want to be a man who reflects you. I want to look in the mirror and see someone who is real, genuine, and pleased with who you made me to be. Show me the parts of my life that are rotten. Amen.
